Thanks for the great info. You listed the top three places I’m looking at to basically retire. I’m older, ya know, 50’s are the new 40’s kinda thing? Looking at Mexico – PV, though after reading your preferences you like Caribbean side Oaxaca Coast. Want to be around people more my age. Also, Panama Beaches and Thailand beaches. Loved the looks of Morocco and prices. May be too far? My concern is I will be on my own and worry about safety. Any tips, suggestions, input?

Snorkeling can be a very rewarding activity. It benefits from its simplicity, where you can simply grab a mask and some fins, rather than hauling a bag full of heavy scuba gear. This also allows for more flexibility, allowing you to bring your gear on trips where bringing tons of scuba gear isn’t a possibility. And the lack of bubbles means you can often get closer to marine wildlife than with scuba gear on.
Rent fins that are neither too tight, nor too loose, and that don't hurt. Having a fin fall off when you most need it, is potentially very bad. And getting sores on your feet from fins that have hard spots or are too tight will ruin your time. Keep in mind that your feet will be wet, and will often shrink a little in the cooler water, and so a snug fit is important. Don't even think about not having fins. They are essential for safety. They give you a tremendous amount of swimming force and will save you a ton of energy. Read more about the different types of fins here.

To measure your foot length, sit down on a chair and place your foot flat on a piece of paper. Trace the foot by holding a pencil vertically and outlining the foot. The longest toe and back of heel are the most important measurements. Using a ruler, measure the distance from the bottom of the heel to the tip of the longest toe. Record the result in both inches and centimeters and use these measurements to find your size in the chart. If one foot is larger than the other, the measurements for the larger foot should be used.

Certain types of underwear are described as bikini underwear and designed for men and women. For women, bikini or bikini-style underwear is underwear that is similar in size and form to a regular bikini. It can refer to virtually any undergarment that provides less coverage to the midriff than lingerie, panties or knickers,[219] especially suited to clothing such as crop tops. For men, bikini briefs are undergarments that are smaller and more revealing than men's classic briefs. Men's bikini briefs can be low- or high-side that are usually lower than true waist, often at hips, and usually have no access pouch or flap, legs bands at tops of thighs.[220] String bikini briefs have front and rear sections that meet in the crotch but not at the waistband, with no fabric on the side of the legs.[221]
They are located north of Australia and east of Bali and offer stunning tropical scenery, a remarkable history, friendly villages, and some of the globe’s most pristine, biologically diverse coral reefs. The only way to reach them is to island-hop the Indonesian archipelago by small planes, ferry services, or eco-friendly cruises for serious divers but it is more than worth the trouble.

here’s a spot that might be interesting to some people. I’ve spent a month two years ago in Cozumel, Mexico (right across from Cancun) and found it to be really cool. I worked on cruise ships and it is one of the major cruise ship stops so there are tourists but mostly during the day while the ships are in port. Other than that it’s a cool and cheap place to stay. Using the app HomeAway (similar to AirBnB) I’ve found a place (it was a studio in a 7 apartment bulding, with a gate and a small pool in the back) that I paid $350 for a month for. The internet was very good and there were a few big supermarkets close by. Cozumel, for example is one of the top spots for scuba diving in the Caribbean and the side of the island that’s opposite to downtown where the cruise ships dock is full of beaches that rarely anyone goes to but it’s a great spot for windsurfing for example.

The fitness boom of the 1980s led to one of the biggest leaps in the evolution of the bikini. According to Mills, "The leg line became superhigh, the front was superlow, and the straps were superthin."[211] Women's magazines used terms like "Bikini Belly",[212] and workout programs were launched to develop a "bikini-worthy body".[213] The tiny "fitness-bikinis" made of lycra were launched to cater to this hardbodied ideal.[214] Movies like Blue Crush and TV reality shows like Surf Girls merged the concepts of bikini models and athletes together, further accentuating the toned body ideal.[215] Some women, motivated by yearly Spring Break festivities that mark the start of the bikini season in North America,[216] engage in eating disorders in an attempt to achieve the ideal bikini body.[215]
One feminist viewpoint sees the bikini uniform as objectification of women athletes.[178] US beach volleyball player Gabrielle Reece described the bikini bottoms as uncomfortable with constant "yanking and fiddling."[177][188] Many female beach volleyball players have suffered injuries by over-straining the abdominal muscles while many others have gone through augmentation mammoplasty to look appealing in their uniforms.[178] Australian competitor Nicole Sanderson said about match break entertainment that "it's kind of disrespectful to the female players. I'm sure the male spectators love it, but I find it a little bit offensive."[189]

Trikini 1967 The trikini appeared briefly in 1967, defined as "a handkerchief and two small saucers."[161] It reappeared in the 1990s as a bikini bottom with a stringed halter of two triangular pieces covering the breasts,[162] and in the 2000s as a costume of three separate pieces.[163] The trikini top comes essentially in two separate parts.[164] The name of this woman's bathing suit is formed from the word "bikini", replacing "bi-", meaning "two", with "tri-", meaning "three".[165] In a variation the three pieces are sold as part of one continuous garment.[166] A variation is called strapless bikini[167] or a no string bikini, often a combination of two pasties with a matching maebari-style bottom.[168]

The total length, inner diameter and/or inner volume of a snorkel tube are matters of utmost importance because they affect the user's ability to breathe normally while swimming or floating head downwards on the surface of the water. These dimensions also have implications for the user's ability to blow residual water out of the tube when surfacing. An overlong snorkel tube may cause breathing resistance, while an overwide tube may prove hard to clear of water. A high-volume tube is liable to encourage a build-up of stale air, including exhaled carbon dioxide, because it constitutes respiratory dead space.

I am moving to Bali next month. I am currently on another Indo Island, less popular and not really paradise but has some pretty destinations (Batam Island). I must say I am so interested in visiting the other places well but if you are visiting Bali it is definitely a romantic experience. It’s the perfect place for a honeymoon and the best part is… it’s cheap! The most expensive thing will probably be the airfare unless you reside in South East Asia.

The Great Astrolabe Reef is, at more than 60 miles long, one of the largest and most magnificent barrier reefs on the planet. It surrounds several of Fiji’s islands, including Ono Island, and the warmth and clarity of the water brings out the vivid colors of the majestic underwater world. In fact, on calm days, visibility can be as great as 100 feet or more, allowing both snorkelers and scuba divers the chance to see vast displays of ocean life in every direction.

A snorkel can be useful when scuba diving as it is a safe way of swimming face down at the surface for extended periods to conserve the bottled air supply, or in an emergency situation when there is a problem with either air supply or regulator.[63] Many dives do not require the use of a snorkel at all, and some scuba divers do not consider a snorkel a necessary or even useful piece of equipment, but the usefulness of a snorkel depends on the dive plan and the dive site. If there is no requirement to swim face down and see what is happening underwater, then a snorkel is not useful. If it is necessary to swim over heavy seaweed which can entangle the pillar valve and regulator if the diver swims face upward to get to and from the dive site, then a snorkel is useful to save breathing gas.
If you desire something a bit more mellow and authentic, the beach towns in the spectacular state of Kerala are worth exploring. I’ve heard good things about the beach town of Varkala, which has beautiful beaches and soaring cliffs. If you want to relax and really explore your inner world through meditation, I recommend spending some time in an ashram in Rishikesh or Dharamsala.
All existing new-generation snorkel-masks (see Figure 3) are full-face masks covering the eyes, the nose and the mouth. They enable surface snorkellers to breathe nasally or orally and may be a workaround in the case of surface snorkellers who gag in response to the presence of standard snorkel mouthpieces in their mouths. Some old-generation snorkel-masks (See Figure 11) are full-face masks covering the eyes, nose and mouth, while others exclude the mouth, covering the eyes and the nose only. The 1950s US Divers "Marino" hybrid comprised a single snorkel mask with eye and nose coverage and a separate snorkel for the mouth.[60]
In addition to AirBNB try VRBO too. You can negotiate prices down significantly if you’re staying long enough, especially if it’s off-season. From my experience, all the best spots are found by talking to locals and other travelings when you’re there. A Lonely Planet guide can help you find cheap places as well, to stay until you find something better. You’re crazy to leave Vancouver with the summer coming imho!

Discovering a tropical island paradise that hasn’t lost its authentic beauty to stampeding tourists yet is a rare occurrence nowadays. If you were to visit the island of Koh Phi Phi in Thailand during the early 1990s, you would have found beautiful coral reef systems, untouched marine fauna and crystal clear blue waters — fast-forward to 2017 and you’ll find fast food restaurants and hotels on every corner. What was once an immaculate tropical island has since suffered major damage due to increasing amounts of visitors. Here are five beautiful under-the-radar tropical places to visit before the tourists take over.

Due in part to its sometimes inhospitable weather (high winds, cold weather and fog), the area was largely undeveloped throughout most of San Francisco's early history, when it was known as part of the "Outside Lands." Development finally came in the late-19th century: a steam railroad was in place by 1884 to bring people to the first amusement ride at the city’s oceanside, a "Gravity Railroad" roller coaster, and to the Ocean Beach Pavilion for concerts and dancing. By 1890, trolley lines reached Ocean Beach: the Ferries and Cliff House Railroad, Park & Ocean Railroad, and Sutro Railroad that encouraged commercial amusement development as a trolley park.[6] The Cliff House, which opened in 1863, and Sutro Baths, which opened in 1896, drew thousands of visitors.[7]

1969: First national standard on snorkels. In December 1969, the British Standards Institution publishes British standard BS 4532 entitled "Specification for snorkels and face masks"[46] and prepared by a committee on which the British Rubber Manufacturers' Association, the British Sub-Aqua Club, the Department for Education and Science, the Federation of British Manufacturers of Sports and Games, the Ministry of Defence Navy Department and the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents are represented. This British standard sets different maximum and minimum snorkel dimensions for adult and child users, specifies materials and design features for tubes and mouthpieces and requires a warning label and a set of instructions to be enclosed with each snorkel. In February 1980 and June 1991, the Deutsches Institut für Normung publishes the first and second editions of German standard DIN 7878 on snorkel safety and testing.[47] This German standard sets safety and testing criteria comparable to British standard BS 4532 with an additional requirement that every snorkel must be topped with a fluorescent red or orange band to alert other water users of the snorkeller's presence. In November 1988, the Austrian Standards Institute publishes Austrian standard ÖNORM S 4223[48] entitled "Tauch-Zubehör; Schnorchel; Abmessungen, sicherheitstechnische Anforderungen, Prüfung, Normkennzeichnung" in German, subtitled "Diving accessories; snorkel; dimensions, safety requirements, testing, marking of conformity" in English and closely resembling German Standard DIN 7878 of February 1980 in specifications. The first and second editions of European standard EN 1972 on snorkel requirements and test methods[49] appear in July 1997 and December 2015. This European standard refines snorkel dimension, airflow and joint-strength testing and matches snorkel measurements to the user's height and lung capacity. The snorkels regulated by these British, German and European standards exclude combined masks and snorkels in which the snorkel tubes open into the mask.
The greatest danger to snorkelers are inshore and leisure craft such as jet skis, speed boats and the like. A snorkeler is often submerged in the water with only the tube visible above the surface. Since these craft can ply the same areas snorkelers visit, the chance for accidental collisions exists. Sailboats and sailboards are a particular hazard as their quiet propulsion systems may not alert the snorkeler of their presence. A snorkeler may surface underneath a vessel and/or be struck by it. Few locations demarcate small craft areas from snorkeling areas, unlike that done for regular beach-bathers, with areas marked by buoys. Snorkelers may therefore choose to wear bright or highly reflective colors/outfits and/or to employ dive flags to enable easy spotting by boaters and others.[citation needed]
I’m a Maui native and it is not that expensive! You just need to do it the smart way, avoid tourist traps and ABC stores, stop at Costco to stock up on supplies before you reach your hotel. Many of the best things Hawaii has to offer are free: beaches, sunsets, hikes, snorkeling, walking the streets of small beach towns. Condos are also way cheaper than hotels and they are usually beachfront.

Most accommodations are located on the island of Providenciales, located in the Northwest Caicos Islands, which offers 12 miles of hotels along the sparkling white Grace Bay Beach. This island is known as a party island and features luxury resorts, fancy shops and fine restaurants. Other noteworthy islands include North, South and Middle Caicos, Salt Clay and Grand Turk, home to the capital city of Cockburn Town. No matter where you choose to spend your relaxing vacation, rest assured it will be spectacularly beautiful and a perfect piece of paradise. Keep reading for more island destinations. Readm ore

After making sure your equipment works and fits, do a test run. Get used to breathing out of a snorkel. Swim around a pool if necessary. Get used to the feeling first. If you are in a beach, start by swimming around the shallow area before plunging into the deep. By practicing, you are getting yourself used to the feeling of swimming around and breathing through the snorkel. Remember to always keep the top of the snorkel afloat. If water comes in, you can easily blow the water out.

It's the beach we lived across for 15 years and still love this place. Parking is okay but on sunny weekends it becomes quite challenging. Great to see the locals out surfing. Not cool to see people smoking marijuana in cars and on the beach, especially with kids around. The city can do better with the trash can maintenance. It's always overflowing when we go there. Aside from that enjoy the beautiful sunsets, a game of beach volleyball or just a stroll on the beach. Our dogs loved the sand but not so much on windy days.
Older proprietary designs came with special facilities. One design separated the eyes and the nose into separate mask compartments to reduce fogging. Another enabled the user to remove integrated snorkels and insert plugs instead, thus converting the snorkel-mask into an ordinary diving mask. New-generation snorkel-masks enclose the nose and the mouth within an inner mask at the demand end directly connected to the single snorkel with its valve at the supply end.
The easternmost tip of the Polynesian Triangle (Hawaii – New Zealand – Easter Island) is the most mysterious island in Polynesia and perhaps the entire world. Discovered in 1722, Easter Island is home to nearly 1,000 strange monolithic statues known as Moai. Whether depicting ancient ancestors or alien visitors, very little is known about this strange ancient culture which disappeared due to civil war, diseases introduced by early European visitors and 19th-century slave raiding parties. What is entirely clear is that the island’s ancient civilization lived in complete isolation for nearly 1,000 years and slowly depleted the island’s natural resources. A visit to Easter Island is both eerie and enchanting, also raising questions about the future of our own planetary existence.

In snorkeling, the swimmers nose and mouth are submerged and covered by a mask. Breathing takes places through a mouthpiece connected to the L or J shaped tube that gets air from being above the water surface. If diving, the swimmer has to hold his breath, the tube is allowed to flood when underwater. The snorkeler expels water from the snorkel either with a sharp exhalation on return to the surface (blast clearing) or by tilting the head back shortly before reaching the surface and exhaling until reaching or "breaking" the surface (displacement method) and facing forward again before inhaling the next breath. The displacement method expels water by displacing its presence in the snorkel with air; it is a more advanced technique that takes practice but clears the snorkel with much greater efficiency.
Ocean Beach has one of the longest running Men's 16" “Chicago Style” Softball Leagues in San Diego. Do you have a team of guys who would like to play? Multiple seasons throughout the year. All games are played on Tuesday nights at Bob Kenny Field (corner of Ebers and Newport) in Ocean Beach. If you are interested, please call the Recreation Center at (619) 531-1527 for more information.
Is it the best beach in the world? Well quite frankly, no, it isn't. Ocean Beach is nothing like what you'd find in Marin or on the Central Coast. It isn't the bluest or the clearest with the softest sand and the waves aren't as magical. Despite this, it still offers a wonderful escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. It's just a short trek over the Bay Bridge from the East Bay. In the summer, it makes for a wonderful way to cool off. Ocean Beach runs parallel to the great highway, and there's a nice walking trail located right beside it. The waves will sometimes leave an unusually foamy substance on the sand that I've only seen here at this beach. Although it gets crowded, I've never experienced it with an overload of people like you'd find at Baker Beach. The wind is blusterous and the waves are strong, but it still always feels so calming. If you're lucky enough to come here during a time when nobody else is around, take full advantage of it. There are a few benches located on the walking path where you can sit and have lunch. Some people like to make bonfires here when it's permitted. But no matter what, you should always bring a jacket and maybe even a blanket if you can because it gets super cold. I'm super grateful to have Ocean Beach so close by. It's a great local beach that will forever be hailed as a San Francisco favorite.
Mazunte, Zipolite and Puerto Escondido are the three coolest beach towns I’ve found in Mexico. The Oaxacan Coast (pronounced wa-hah-kah) has a peaceful tropical ambiance, largely because it’s relatively off-the-beaten-track location far from high-traffic international destinations like Cancun or Puerto Vallarta. The nearby ecotourism hotspot Huatulco has a big airport but nothing like the other major resorts in Mexico.
It might come as a surprise but snorkeling is actually more floating than swimming. A general rule to stick by is to not use your hands. Fold them across your chest to help keep you warm. Float, glide, and direct yourself using your fins. Swim at a pace that allows you to breathe normally. Snorkeling is supposed to be a relaxing activity. Remember, if you’re out of breath and flailing like a whale, you are most likely doing something wrong. If you’re not a strong swimmer/floater, there is nothing wrong with using a life jacket. Using any sort of floatation device also helps you focus on your breathing, allowing you to fully relax.
The best snorkel reefs start shallow, and few are shallower than Glovers Reef Atoll. At low tide, coral heads pop from the sea, visible to beachgoers at the private-island Off the Wall Dive Center and Resort. Don a mask and jump in to witness the rainbow of reds, yellows and purples of the hard and soft corals, and thriving marine life. You don’t need to cover much ground to encounter diversity. Here, the best tactic is to hover above a patch of reef and check out the hundreds of species, from blenny fish, each only 3 inches long, to toadfish, a pancake-flat, whiskered bottom-dweller that betrays its hiding spots when emitting a loud croak.
In many ways, it's kind of a quiet sleepy place that time forgot. It's one of the few places left in San Diego (or the rest of the country for that matter) where the shops are locally owned and managed, for the most part. Some places would welcome a Starbucks or a Target, but for many OBecians this is cause for concern. In a world that is rapidly homogenizing, Ocean Beach stands proud as one of the last real beach towns left in California, and much of that uniqueness stems from all the independent shops and mom-n-pop restaurants in our little town.

An overused travel cliché says that the toughest places to reach are often the most rewarding. This cannot be truer in the case of Ofu Island in the remote US territory of American Samoa. One of mother nature’s finest pieces of work, touchdown on the beachside runway in Ofu signals the start of the weekly rush hour – as locals greet relatives returning from the main island with a big smile, government workers change shifts, and a few lucky tourists begin the vacation of a lifetime. On the menu? Jungle covered peaks hiding rare coconut crabs under the canopy, sleepy villages waking up only for Sunday church service, and a beach worthy of an Oscar – if only ‘The Academy’ would be aware of its existence.
At one time, a vast sand-dune wilderness (now the Sunset and Richmond districts) separated Ocean Beach from the rest of San Francisco. Development came in the late 19th century when a steam railroad was put in place to bring people to a fashionable resort on the outskirts of town. Later the Cliff House, and the now-gone Sutro Baths and Playland at the Beach amusement park was put in place. Today, Ocean Beach is still as popular for seaside drives, brisk jogs, and sunset walks as it was in the early 1900s.

Convienient & Fun! Our boats are docked right behind our dive shops.  We have four of them, so mechanical issues or surprises??, no problem…we can still complete the trip with another dive boat.  You park, come in & check-in, then step out to our on-site equipment fitting area for your gear and then from there onto the boat (easy, right? or should we say bada bing, bada boom!).  No travel to another destination, just to our beautiful reefs, which is still just a short boat ride and the best access to some great dive sites.
Heim's atome was more in keeping with the sense of propriety of the 1940s, but Réard's design won the public's attention.[49] Although Heim's design was the first worn on the beach and initially sold more swimsuits, it was Réard's description of the two-piece swimsuit as a bikini that stuck.[9][64] As competing designs emerged, he declared in advertisements that a swimsuit could not be a genuine bikini "unless it could be pulled through a wedding ring."[10] Modern bikinis were first made of cotton and jersey.[65]
